The Origin

Temanggung — Indonesia’s Hidden Gem for Fine Grade Robusta

While Lampung commands the highest volume, Temanggung in the highlands of Central Java produces what many roasters and blenders consider Indonesia’s finest Robusta — a bean with a distinctly cleaner profile, higher density, and more complex character than standard lowland Robusta.

Temanggung regency sits at 500–1,000 metres above sea level on the fertile volcanic slopes between Mount Sindoro and Mount Sumbing in Central Java. This elevated terroir — cooler temperatures, well-draining volcanic andosol soil, and reliable rainfall — produces Robusta beans with significantly lower defect rates, higher bean density, and a cup that surprises buyers expecting standard commercial Robusta.

Swarna Agro has direct relationships with cooperative networks in Temanggung, and the region was the origin of our first government-recognised container export — certified by Indonesia’s Provincial Department of Industry and Trade (Disperindag). It is one of our most established and trusted supply chains.

Swarna Agro, a government-supported Indonesia coffee company, shipping a full container of wholesale Arabica and Robusta coffee beans to the UAE, an event facilitated by the Indonesian FTA Center and Disperindag, demonstrating proven export logistics and supply chain reliability.

Cupping Profile

Flavor Notes & Cup Characteristics

Aroma

Clean, rich, and faintly floral — distinctly different from lowland Robusta. Roasted grain and dark cocoa notes with a mild, pleasant earthiness that doesn’t overwhelm.

Body & Texture

Full body with a notably creamy, smooth texture. Higher bean density than standard Robusta produces a thick, stable crema in espresso — consistent shot after shot.

Finish

Clean, balanced finish with lingering notes of dark chocolate and roasted nuts. Lower bitter astringency than lowland varieties — a distinguishing characteristic for premium blends.

Terroir

What Makes Temanggung Different

Temanggung sits in the tobacco and coffee belt of Central Java, wedged between two of Indonesia’s most active stratovolcanoes — Mount Sindoro (3,136m) and Mount Sumbing (3,371m). The constant deposit of volcanic ash over centuries has created exceptionally fertile andosol soil with high phosphorus and potassium content — ideal conditions for dense, flavour-rich Robusta.

The highland microclimate — with temperatures averaging 20–24°C and distinct wet and dry seasons — forces the coffee plant to develop more slowly than lowland varieties. This extended maturation period builds greater bean density and a more concentrated flavour profile: the key reason why Fine Grade Temanggung consistently outperforms standard commercial Robusta in cupping evaluations.

Swarna Agro’s export history with Temanggung Robusta includes a government-witnessed shipment to Egypt — the first of its kind for the region — establishing the origin’s credibility in international B2B markets.
