Arabica and Robusta are the two coffee species behind nearly all commercial coffee. Arabica grows at higher altitude, costs more, and gives a brighter, more complex cup. Robusta grows at lower altitude, has roughly double the caffeine, and gives a bolder, more bitter cup at a lower cost — which is why it dominates espresso crema, instant coffee, and high-volume blends.

Quick take: choose Arabica for single-origin filter coffee and specialty light roasts. Choose Robusta for espresso body, crema, instant coffee, and cost-sensitive blends. Most commercial roasters use both, for different products.

Factor Arabica Robusta
Growing altitude 600–2,000+ masl 0–800 masl
Caffeine content ~1.2–1.5% ~2.2–2.7%
Acidity Medium to bright Low
Body Light to medium Full, heavy
Flavor notes Fruity, floral, complex Earthy, bold, sometimes bitter
Bean shape Oval, curved crease Rounder, straighter crease
Disease resistance Lower Higher
Typical use Filter, specialty single-origin Espresso crema, instant coffee, blends

Where Indonesia Fits Into This

Indonesia produces both, and the split matters: roughly 85% of Indonesian coffee output is Robusta, concentrated in Sumatra (Lampung), Java (Temanggung), and Sulawesi. Arabica is the smaller, higher-value share, grown at altitude in origins like Gayo (Aceh), Bajawa (Flores), and Preanger (West Java).

Robusta arrived in Indonesia in the late 19th century, introduced by the Dutch after coffee rust devastated Arabica plantations. It thrived in the archipelago’s lowland tropical climate, and today Indonesia is the world’s second-largest Robusta producer.

Why Buyers Choose Indonesian Robusta Specifically

Indonesian Robusta has a reputation that goes beyond “cheap and bold.” Most of it is processed using Giling Basah (wet-hull), a method unique to Indonesia that produces a heavier body and lower acidity than Robusta from Vietnam or Brazil. That’s a real point of difference for espresso blenders and instant coffee manufacturers who want body without harshness.

Origin matters within Indonesia too. Lampung Robusta is the high-volume, consistent workhorse. Temanggung Robusta, grown at higher altitude in Central Java, produces a noticeably cleaner cup with lower astringency — closer to what specialty blenders want. See Lampung specs or Temanggung specs.
