Open any Indonesian tea supplier’s price list and you’ll see the same cryptic line items: BOP, BOPF, PF, Fannings, Dust. They look like five different teas. They aren’t. They come out of the same sorting stage at the end of production, and the difference is mostly particle size.

That difference still decides what you can build with the tea. Order dust for a loose-leaf pouch and your customers will complain about the cup. Pay for broken leaf that you plan to run through a tea bag line and you’re spending extra for no reason. This guide covers Indonesian black tea the way an importer needs it: where it grows, what each grade means, which grade fits which product, and what to ask a supplier before the first container ships.

What Is Indonesian Black Tea?

Indonesian black tea is fully oxidized Camellia sinensis tea grown mainly on Java and Sumatra, then sorted into grades by leaf size: leaf, broken (BOP), fannings (BOPF, PF) and dust. Importers buy it in bulk mostly for tea bags, blends and ready-to-drink bases.

Java is the better-known origin. Its mountain estates have a temperate climate and volcanic soil, and the teas tend toward a full body with a slight sweetness, which is why they show up in breakfast blends. Sumatra teas usually run darker, with a more mineral character that comes from the wet, humid growing conditions. Origin shifts the cup more than most buyers expect, so ask which region a specific lot comes from instead of accepting “Indonesian” as the answer.

Indonesian Black Tea Grades Explained

In orthodox production there are four basic groups: leaf, broken, fannings and dust. The grade comes from the final sorting stage, not from how good the tea tastes. A grade tells you particle size and how fast the tea brews. It does not tell you the quality of the lot. Two BOPF lots from two different estates can taste nothing alike.

Grade What it is Typical use
BOP (Broken Orange Pekoe) Leaf broken during processing. Infuses faster and stronger than whole leaf. Loose leaf and tea bag lines, base for blends, ready-to-drink
BOPF (Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings) Smaller pieces sorted out of broken grades. Strong, brisk, quick to brew. Tea bags
PF (Pekoe Fannings) Fine graded particles with a rich black color and fragrant aroma. Tea bag manufacturing, blends, ready-to-drink
Fannings Small graded particles, coarser than dust and finer than whole leaf. Standard tea bag material
Dust The finest grade. Maximum surface area, so extraction is fast and full-bodied. Tea bags, instant tea, ready-to-drink

One note on the name: “Orange Pekoe” has nothing to do with oranges. It’s a grading term for black tea made from young, tender leaves.

CTC or Orthodox? Ask Before You Buy

Indonesian black tea is made in two ways. CTC (crush, tear, curl) gives a strong, malty cup that infuses quickly. Orthodox gives a slower infusion with more subtle floral or fruity notes and a hint of astringency. Both can be graded BOP, BOPF or dust, so the grade name alone won’t tell you which one you’re getting.

If your product depends on a specific cup profile, ask which process made the lot and ask for a sample. We confirm this for each lot instead of assuming.

Which Grade Should You Buy?

Start from the product, not the grade list.

  • Tea bags for retail or foodservice: BOPF, PF or fannings. The small particles brew quickly and strongly in a bag, which is why they’re the standard material for it.
  • Instant tea or a very strong, fast extraction: dust. The finest grade extracts the most in the least time.
  • Loose leaf packs, blending houses, flavored lines: BOP. It gives you a visible broken leaf and a good base for flavoring.
  • Bottled or canned iced tea: BOP or the fannings grades, depending on how strong you want the base. Test a sample at your own dilution before you commit.
  • Premium or organic positioning: look at our organic black tea, grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.

What to Ask a Bulk Black Tea Supplier

Most sourcing mistakes happen before the order, not after. Before you sign, get clear answers on these:

  1. Exact grade and particle size. “Black tea” isn’t a spec. BOPF, PF and dust are.
  2. Process and origin of the lot. Orthodox or CTC, and which region.
  3. A sample that matches your standard. If you already sell a tea, send it. A good supplier matches it, then sends a sample for approval before production.
  4. Packaging. Bulk export packaging, or finished formats for private label.
  5. Minimum order quantity. It varies by grade and packaging, so ask for the figure for your exact request.
  6. Documents and shipping terms. Confirm what the supplier handles before the container leaves port.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between BOP and BOPF?

BOP is broken leaf, a larger particle that brews stronger and faster than whole leaf. BOPF is the smaller fannings-size pieces sorted out of the broken grades. It brews even faster and stronger, which is why it’s the common choice for tea bags.

What is dust grade black tea used for?

Dust is the finest black tea grade. Its small, uniform particles give maximum surface area for extraction, so it’s used for tea bags, instant tea and ready-to-drink bases where you want a fast, full-bodied brew.

Does PT. Swarna Agro supply private label black tea?

Yes. We supply black tea wholesale and offer private label and OEM manufacturing for brands that need custom blends, packaging or branding.

What is the minimum order quantity?

It depends on the grade and packaging. Send us the grade, volume and destination and we’ll quote the MOQ for your request.

Can you match my existing tea?
